Sketching outdoors builds a 'memory bank' of sights, sounds and feelings that I can return to in my studio. When I’m working on a landscape, one of my aims is to include indications of the layers and fragments of the past and to abstract elements that interest me. Recently, my main focus has been the nature of the river and its crossings near where I live in East Lothian.
